Uniform Traffic Rules

Uniform rules should not eliminate the use of traffic speed studies to determine speed limits.

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has proposed changes to the rules for posting traffic signs that could have adverse effects on drivers for decades to come. These changes are buried within the extensive Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), and unless we take action, they are likely to become law.

Speed Limits and Stop Signs

At the heart of the proposed rule are two critical issues: speed limits and stop signs. The FHWA is recommending eliminating the use of traffic speed studies as a basis for determining speed limits. This means that speed limits could be set based on opinion rather than data, leading to unintentional violations by responsible drivers. Additionally, the proposed changes could make it easier for local governments to introduce more stop signs without proper analysis.

The Bread and Butter of Setting Proper Speed Limits

We must rise up against these proposed changes and protect the well-established 85th percentile standard for setting proper speed limits. This standard is crucial for ensuring safe and optimal speed limits on our roads. By using a data-driven approach, we can set speed limits that most drivers feel comfortable with, promoting safer driving conditions.

Advocating for Data-Driven Regulations

We must make it clear that traffic speed distribution studies should remain a requirement for determining speed limit postings, rather than being relegated to optional guidance. This is crucial to ensure that speed limits are set based on actual data and not subjective opinions. By retaining this requirement, we can prevent unnecessary enforcement measures and protect all drivers, especially those in marginalized communities.

Let your voice be heard. Take a stand today and ensure that our roads remain safe and fair for all drivers. Together, we can make a difference and protect the future of driving.
