Civil asset forfeiture is the process by which law enforcement can confiscate property, money, and assets from individuals who have not been convicted of a crime. In many cases, this practice is used against people who are not even charged with a crime, leaving them essentially guilty until proven innocent.

This practice is deeply troubling, as it allows government agencies to seize property and assets from innocent citizens without due process or evidence of wrongdoing. Civil asset forfeiture allows law enforcement to take people’s homes, cars, and life savings without any justification, leaving them with no recourse to reclaim what was taken from them.

It’s not just the process itself that is flawed; it also incentivizes law enforcement to engage in unethical behavior by providing them with a financial stake in the confiscation of assets. In many cases, the money and property seized through civil asset forfeiture are used to fund the very agencies that seized them, creating a conflict of interest that is unacceptable.

This practice is an affront to not just individual rights, but also to democracy and the rule of law. It undermines the trust citizens have in their government and erodes the very foundation of our justice system.

We denounce civil asset forfeiture and call for its abolition. It is a fundamentally unjust practice that violates the most basic rights of citizens and undermines the very fabric of our society. We urge policymakers to take action to end this practice and return to a system that is fair, just, and respects individual rights.
