Throughout our history, the National Motorists Association has fearlessly challenged various issues. From laser gun accuracy and the right to a jury trial for traffic offenses, to visual estimation and vehicle seizure laws, we’ve consistently fought for motorists’ rights. However, we are now faced with our most formidable challenge yet: the ticket camera industry and its unapologetic exploitation of short yellow light times.

The Power of Increasing Yellow Light Times

It’s undeniable that increasing the duration of the yellow light at troublesome intersections can have a profound and positive impact. In fact, research shows that a mere one-second increase in the yellow light time can reduce violations by a staggering 50%. Even ardent ticket camera supporters acknowledge this undeniable fact.

Unveiling the Exploitation

Unfortunately, several cities have been exposed for intentionally shortening yellow light times to maximize profits from ticket cameras. We strongly believe that there are more cities engaging in this deceitful practice, waiting to be discovered.

The Profitability Puzzle

Red-light cameras can only thrive in poorly engineered intersections. Once an intersection’s design is rectified, the profitability of ticket cameras diminishes rapidly. From this, it becomes evident that as soon as the financial gains evaporate, the cameras disappear.

North Carolina: A Case in Point

The impact of our efforts is already evident in North Carolina. As the courts compelled cities to allocate their ticket camera profits to local schools, a majority of the state’s ticket camera programs were swiftly shut down. This success exemplifies the potential for change when we address the underlying issues and redirect the focus towards enhancing road safety.

Our Ambitious Goal

Our ultimate objective is to ensure the proper timing of traffic lights in the 300+ U.S. cities that currently employ red-light cameras. By achieving this, we aim to eradicate this widespread problem across all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Legislation for Change

We firmly believe that legislation mandating appropriate yellow light times is of paramount importance. Currently, such legislation is glaringly absent. Through our project, we hope to galvanize support for the creation of comprehensive laws that protect motorists’ interests and promote a safer road environment.

Together, let’s challenge the ticket camera industry, safeguard motorists’ rights, and pave the way for a future where ticket camera exploitation is eliminated, and road safety takes center stage.
