Understanding Speed Traps

When the term “speed traps” comes to mind, most people envision police officers hiding behind billboards or waiting strategically at locations where the speed limit suddenly changes. However, we believe that there is a more comprehensive definition that accurately describes these situations and beyond.

We define a speed trap as any situation where traffic enforcement focuses on extracting revenue from drivers rather than improving safety. This is made possible by setting speed limits below the prevailing flow of traffic.

The Revenue Motive

Unfortunately, speed traps are commonly employed by municipalities as a means of generating revenue to fund government operations. While the justification often given is “safety”, the underlying motive is financial gain. The police department seeks more funds for equipment and salaries, the city aims to avoid raising taxes, and local residents and businesses often support speed traps because they result in reduced local taxes. Moreover, it’s usually not the local residents who receive the tickets in these scenarios.

Prioritizing Safety Over Revenue

Our primary concern is the safety of all road users. We firmly believe that traffic enforcement should prioritize actual safety measures rather than focusing on extracting revenue through speed traps. We advocate for setting speed limits based on the prevailing flow of traffic and employing other proven safety measures to ensure the well-being of all road users. Our goal is to promote fair and equitable enforcement tactics that truly enhance road safety while respecting drivers’ rights.
