Vehicle Miles Traveled Tax
This scheme has the potential to go beyond taxing into government overreach.
Taxing car drivers is a practice we’re all too familiar with, but the proposed Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT) tax takes it to a whole new level. This scheme, touted as a replacement for dwindling fuel taxes, has the potential to go beyond taxing and delve into government overreach, along with unethical revenue generating tactics. It’s a system that threatens to separate motorists from their hard-earned wages while enabling social engineering at its worst.
Social Engineering
Proponents of the VMT tax have already begun discussing how it can be used to manipulate our behavior. They propose charging higher per-mile fees if we exceed a government-determined mileage limit, effectively penalizing us for the audacity to drive more than what bureaucrats deem acceptable. This level of micromanagement not only infringes on individual freedoms but also threatens to impose financial burdens on those who rely on their cars for work, family, or other essential activities.
Mandating Modes of Transportation
Even more concerning is the suggestion that the VMT tax could be used to favor certain modes of transportation over others. Imagine a system where the government determines that you should use transit or a bicycle for a particular trip, and if you choose to drive instead, you face a higher fee. This type of manipulative tactic not only undermines personal choice but also makes motorists pawns in a larger social engineering agenda.
Government Surveillance
Furthermore, the implementation of the VMT tax raises legitimate concerns about privacy and government surveillance. If every mile we drive is tracked and monitored, it opens the door for intrusive and invasive monitoring of our movements by the government. This level of surveillance goes far beyond the reasonable boundaries of taxation and encroaches on our individual privacy rights.
Ultimately, while the VMT tax may be marketed as a reasonable solution to declining fuel tax revenue, it cannot be divorced from the broader implications it carries. The potential for government overreach, unethical revenue generating tactics, and invasion of our privacy make it a deeply problematic proposition. It is vital for policymakers to explore alternative solutions that prioritize individual freedoms, protect privacy rights, and avoid the dangers of government intrusion into our daily lives.
